Crenson Seedless Grape, also known as Karen or Lady Red, is a newly introduced late-maturing seedless grape variety from the United States. While it offers excellent quality and high market value, it has a weak resistance to diseases, making it highly vulnerable to white rot and downy mildew—especially during the rainy season. If not properly managed, these diseases can lead to severe early leaf drop, fruit rot, and even total crop loss, causing significant economic damage to farmers. Over the past few years, we have gained valuable experience in managing these diseases in an eco-friendly way. Below are the key strategies for preventing and controlling white rot and downy mildew in Crenson Seedless Grapes during the rainy season. **1. White Rot** - **Symptoms:** White rot primarily affects the shoots, leaves, and fruit clusters of Crenson grapes. It commonly occurs in hot and wet conditions, especially during summer. Infected fruit stems become dry, and the berries soften and rot. Severe infections can cause extensive defoliation. When leaves are infected, they develop large brown circular spots that eventually break and lose function, leading to early leaf fall. New shoots are also susceptible, especially through wounds. Infected shoots show water-soaked brown lesions, which can lead to dieback and hinder the growth of young vines. High temperatures and heavy rainfall significantly promote the spread of white rot, with higher incidence rates in poorly drained soils. - **Control Methods:** White rot is most active between mid-June and August. After fruit bagging, apply a 1:0.7:200 Bordeaux mixture every 15 days to protect the leaves and shoots. Alternating with 80% carbendazim (1000 times dilution) or 80% chlorothalonil (800 times dilution) helps reduce resistance and improves effectiveness. **2. Downy Mildew** - **Symptoms:** Downy mildew mainly attacks the leaves of Crenson grapes. It becomes more prevalent from mid-June to September, especially in humid and rainy conditions. Cold, damp weather, fog, and frequent rain create ideal conditions for the disease. Young leaves are more susceptible than older ones. However, once the fruit is bagged, it is generally protected from downy mildew. - **Control Methods:** Timely application of Bordeaux mixture after fruit bagging is crucial for protection. Apply it every 10–15 days, especially when other diseases are being controlled. In cases of heavy rainfall or severe downy mildew, use fungicides such as 52.5% Mancozeb at 2000 times dilution, 66.8% Propineb at 1000 times, or 59% Metalaxyl-M at 600 times. Rotate fungicides regularly to prevent the development of resistant strains. By implementing these preventive and control measures, growers can effectively manage white rot and downy mildew, ensuring better yield and quality for Crenson Seedless Grapes.
