Farmers should pay attention to raising sheep

In rural areas, the collaboration among sheep farmers can be effectively organized through the establishment of a sheep-raising consortium. Within this consortium, 3 to 5 households can jointly raise one high-quality ram and offer paid services to other members. This cooperative model not only enhances breeding efficiency but also reduces individual costs. The consortium can further establish partnerships with nearby sheep farms, allowing members to access advanced breeding techniques and artificial insemination services during the mating season. By avoiding the need for each household to maintain its own ram, this approach significantly lowers production expenses. According to regional experience, it is essential to ensure timely vaccination against diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and the triple-four vaccine. The consortium can coordinate the purchase of quality vaccines, organize uniform vaccinations, and implement disease prevention measures. Additionally, insect repellent drugs can be purchased collectively and applied uniformly, which not only reduces overall consumption but also promotes healthier sheep growth. One of the major challenges in sheep farming is the low level of husbandry knowledge and poor management practices, particularly in terms of nutrition and disease prevention—especially during the winter and spring when forage is scarce. A recommended practice is to harvest and dry grass during the growing season, store it properly to avoid moisture damage, and then process it into a fine feed for use during the colder months. Corn silage can also be prepared in the autumn for winter feeding. During the winter and spring, empty ewes should receive 100–150 grams of feed per day, while pregnant sheep require 200–450 grams daily. To make the most of available resources, by-products like bran, sweet potato residue, soybean meal, corn bran, and noodles can be used in feed formulation. For every kilogram of body weight, add 0.05 g of iron, 0.8 g of sodium selenite, 0.6 g of choline chloride, 0.03 g of zinc, and 0.8 g of vitamin D3. The feed should contain approximately 0.5% sodium chloride, 2% calcium hydrogen phosphate, along with lysine and copper-containing amino acids. To prevent malnutrition and anemia, administer B12 powder at 1 mg per kg of body weight and 0.8 g of compound vitamins twice a month, with each treatment lasting one week. Insect control is also crucial. Insect repellents should be applied once every three months, using avermectins twice with a 7- to 10-day interval between applications, following the manufacturer's instructions. Seasonal adjustments are necessary—adding spleen-stimulating agents, detoxifying remedies, and cold-prevention formulas as needed. Herbal preparations for cough and respiratory issues should also be administered according to seasonal changes. This comprehensive approach ensures better health, productivity, and long-term sustainability in sheep farming.
