Wintering method for large potted white orchids

Cut the plastic rope into pieces about 50 centimeters long, and tie each one individually to the branches of the white orchid. Then, gently pull each rope from top to bottom down toward the trunk, shaping it into a broom-like form.

Begin the process carefully—start with light pressure and gradually increase the tension. Slowly reduce the length of the ropes to avoid applying too much force that could break the branches. As you bring the ropes closer to the trunk, make sure they are arranged according to the available space between the branches. Always check the spacing and avoid overlapping the branches, as this can block light and reduce the plant’s cold resistance.

It’s best to stop watering for two days before starting the process, allowing the soil in the pot to dry slightly. This makes it easier to maneuver the branches without resistance. The bundled branches should be reduced by at least two-thirds in width but may appear taller. Place the orchid in a well-lit or bright area. All other care routines remain the same.

The following spring, before moving the orchid back outdoors, carefully untie each branch one by one, starting from the bottom and working upward. When cutting the ropes, hold the branches with one hand and use scissors with the other to prevent them from bouncing back and knocking off new growth. If the branches don’t naturally return to their original position after removing the ropes, perform a gentle anti-pull action to help them straighten out. Be careful not to pull too hard, as this could damage the plant.
