Jujube Winter Pest Control

In recent years, the variety and prevalence of pests and diseases affecting jujube trees have been on the rise, making chemical control a necessary part of the growing season. However, the high cost of chemical treatments, along with the labor involved, often leads to pesticide residues, which contradicts the standards for producing safe, green fruits. By understanding the overwintering habits of these pests and integrating them with winter management practices, targeted interventions can be more effective and efficient. First, pests such as Qingyuan jujube rust, green-lipped stink bugs, and date moths often overwinter in the fallen leaves and weeds beneath the trees. Therefore, it is essential to clear the area around the trees after leaf fall, removing dead branches, rotten fruit, and weeds. These materials should be burned or buried to prevent pest buildup. Second, digging up larvae and cocoons from the soil can significantly reduce the population of pests that will emerge in the following year. This practice helps to lower the initial infestation level before the growing season begins. Third, the old bark under the tree trunk tends to be 1-3°C warmer than the surrounding environment, making it an ideal overwintering site for pests like the red spider and jujube moth. Scraping off the old bark not only removes these pests but also promotes tree growth. This should be done after leaf fall and before new growth begins. A plastic sheet should be placed under the tree to collect the scraped material, which should then be burned or buried. Fourth, painting the tree trunks white serves both as a protective measure against cold and pests. The mixture typically includes 12 parts of quicklime (slaked with cold water), 2 parts of sulfur or 3 parts of lime sulfur concentrate, 2 parts of salt (dissolved in hot water), and 36 parts of water, along with a small amount of glue. The lime and sulfur help protect against frost, sunburn, and disease, while the salt aids in moisture retention and prevents the lime from cracking. Adding glue improves adhesion. The painted area should be high enough to cover all branches that have had their old bark removed, helping to prevent dry tips. Fifth, older trees in Mushudong are more prone to harboring pests and diseases, especially the juvenile armyworm. In winter, a mixture of 10 parts of clay, 3 pieces of broken wheat straw, and a small amount of insecticide can be used to fill tree holes. This helps to suffocate and eliminate overwintering insects. Sixth, during winter pruning, cut off any damaged branches where larvae may be present. For severely affected areas, use a wire brush to remove overwintering insects. Careful removal of yellow thorn moth eggs is also crucial. Lastly, because of the waxy coating on turtle wax, many common pesticides are ineffective. A diesel emulsion can be used instead. Before the jujube trees begin to sprout, spray the entire tree thoroughly with a 5-degree Baumé lime sulfur solution, which helps control red spider mites, pear psylla, and other pests.
