Japanese research says that making universal cells can not use oncogenes

A groundbreaking discovery from Japan has brought new hope to the field of regenerative medicine. In a recent breakthrough, researchers at Kyoto University have found a way to create pluripotent stem cells without the need for oncogenes, which were previously essential in the process. This development marks a significant step forward in making stem cell therapies safer for human use.

Earlier this year, in December, Professor Shinya Yamanaka and his team published their findings in the journal *Nature Biotechnology*. Their research built upon their earlier success in reprogramming skin cells into pluripotent cells by introducing four specific genes. However, one of those genes, *c-Myc*, was known to increase the risk of cancer. In previous experiments, about 20% of mice developed tumors when using this method, highlighting the potential dangers.

In their latest study, the team removed the *c-Myc* gene and tested the remaining three genes. By optimizing the culture conditions, they successfully generated pluripotent cells that did not cause cancer in mice. After 100 days of observation, none of the 26 mice developed tumors, indicating a major improvement in safety.

Despite this progress, Professor Yamanaka emphasized that challenges still remain. The current method requires the use of viruses to deliver the genetic material into skin cells, and these viruses could potentially pose a risk. Further research is needed to eliminate this risk and make the process even safer for future clinical applications.

This breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize medical treatments, offering a safer alternative for patients who may benefit from stem cell therapy. As scientists continue to refine the technique, we may be one step closer to realizing the full potential of regenerative medicine.
