A breakthrough in the treatment of varicose veins — new RF catheters for saphenous vein reflux
In recent years, significant advancements have been made in the management of superficial venous reflux, with one notable innovation being the introduction of ClosureFAST, a next-generation RF catheter developed by VNUS Medical Technology. This device received FDA approval in 2006 for use in endovenous ablation procedures to treat patients suffering from chronic venous insufficiency.
The ClosureFAST system works in tandem with the RFG Plus RF generator, delivering controlled thermal energy directly into the affected saphenous vein. This process causes the vein to collapse and seal within just 3 to 5 minutes, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgical stripping. One of the key advantages of this technology is its ability to monitor and regulate the temperature of the vein wall during treatment, significantly reducing the risk of complications such as vessel perforation, bruising, and post-procedural pain.
Early clinical trials demonstrated impressive results, with over 70 devices showing immediate closure of the treated vein. At the three-day follow-up, only one case showed partial reopening, indicating a high success rate and long-term effectiveness.
This advancement marks a major step forward in the field of vascular medicine, providing patients with a faster, safer, and more comfortable treatment option for venous reflux. As more physicians adopt this technology, it is expected to become a standard in the management of varicose veins and related conditions.
