Traditionally, farmers raise pigs using a "hanging rack" system, where they feed large amounts of green and roughage during the early growth stages. Once the pigs reach 50-60 kilograms, they are quickly switched to high-energy concentrate feed to promote fat gain. This method often leads to significant waste of concentrated feed. On the other hand, a small number of farmers use the "one-stop" feeding approach, where they provide concentrates from the time the piglets are born until slaughter. Although this reduces the overall feeding period, it still fails to make full use of green and roughage feeds.
The "pump-feeding" method offers a more efficient alternative. Compared to the traditional "hanging rack" and "one-stop" methods, it can save 30% and 10% in concentrate feed respectively, while also producing pigs with a higher lean meat ratio. The process involves feeding mainly high-energy, high-protein concentrates with additives before the pigs reach 50-60 kg. At this stage, only a small amount of green feed is given, and no roughage is used. From the 50-60 kg stage until slaughter, the diet consists of 62% concentrate feed, 26% green feed, and 12% roughage.
The scientific basis for the "pump-feeding" method lies in the increased demand for protein and minerals during the middle growth phase of pigs. By providing concentrates at this stage, farmers can effectively meet these nutritional needs, allowing the pigs to grow rapidly and efficiently to the desired weight. This approach not only improves feed utilization but also enhances the quality of the final product.
