As we carefully reversed out of Nana and Papa’s driveway, the car bumped forward onto the dimly lit streets, bathed in the faint glow of a couple streetlamps. My side felt sore—not because I missed my two little ones, who’d been away with us for the last few days, or because I hadn’t had them by my side that night. They were securely strapped into their car seats, beaming and waving "hi" each time I glanced back.
The ache originated from the edge of the center console digging into my ribs as I awkwardly leaned over to interact with the backseat. When I did, my youngest grabbed hold of my finger and refused to let go. So there I stayed for the duration of the drive home, fingers entwined with his, ribs pressed against the worn leather of the console, and a bright-haired toddler grinning broadly.
We made it home safe and sound, and he hasn’t let go since.

P.S. Life has been a whirlwind lately. Between juggling work schedules and finding time to enjoy moments like these, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. But when I’m reminded of how quickly they grow, I’m grateful for every chance to savor these small, everyday joys.
