The young pigeons, which reach an age of 5 to 6 months (from 20 days old until they become sexually mature), are usually paired as juveniles. These young birds grow up to 20 to 25 days old, and while they can move around in the pigeon lofts, they still do not eat solid food on their own. Instead, they rely on their parents or relatives for feeding. Therefore, it's essential to provide the adult pigeons with high-protein feed. This not only satisfies the parents’ appetite but also ensures that the young receive adequate nutrition without overfeeding. At this stage, the parent pigeons may start showing signs of not caring for the young, pushing them to become independent. When the young pigeons reach about 500 grams in weight and appear plump (typically around 23 days old), they are ready for sale, as this is when their meat-to-bone ratio is optimal and their weight is just right. If they are underweight or less fatty, they can be given additional feed for 5 to 7 days before being sold. If the young pigeons are kept for breeding purposes, they should remain with the adults until they are 28 to 30 days old, at which point they can be separated. When the young begin to leave their parents, it’s important to provide them with fine, high-quality feed. After 1 to 2 days, they will typically start eating on their own. Newly transferred young pigeons often experience stress and discomfort in their new environment, leading to anxiety and a lack of appetite. However, after about half a month, they gradually adapt. During this period, careful attention must be paid to feeding and general care, as poor management can lead to mortality. The lofts and nests should be kept clean and quiet. Feed should consist of balanced granular feed, along with enough health sand. A small amount of multivitamin B solution should be added—about 3 to 4 grams per bird per day, given once or twice daily. Bathing helps keep the pigeons' feathers clean, prevents external parasites, and stimulates the production of growth hormones, promoting healthy development. Bathing is recommended once a day, twice on hot days, and once or twice a week on colder days. Cage-raised pigeons may require less frequent bathing. At the same time, encouraging physical activity can help improve their overall fitness. In summer, ensure proper ventilation in the loft and protect the pigeons from mosquitoes. In winter, maintain warmth inside the lofts and secure the doors at night to prevent damage from predators such as cats and rats. When the young pigeons reach two months of age, they begin to molt. At this stage, the feed formula should include more energy-rich ingredients—usually 85% to 90% of the diet—and 5% to 6% flaxseed to support feather regrowth. Clean drinking water should be supplemented with appropriate Chinese herbal medicines like Andrographis and Gentian, along with antibiotics, to prevent respiratory and digestive diseases. Throughout the rearing process, cleanliness is crucial. Pigeon droppings should be removed daily, and feeding and watering equipment should be regularly cleaned. Prevent contamination of feed and water sources by pigeon waste.
