My daughter is currently at her morning preschool class, while my youngest is still rubbing his eyes, still in his pajamas as I try to juggle feeding him oatmeal with one hand and typing this hurried note. I’ve got less than an hour to throw together a suitcase and figure out how to squint at my phone screen without completely losing what’s left of its readability before I head off to Miami for work. It’s a trip that usually helps me escape the biting chill of autumn in Michigan, where we always find ourselves bundled up in scarves and hats, dragging hay-filled wagons and picking apples to bake into the perfect spiced pies. But here in Florida, the cold snap feels more like a warm hug, and I can still get away with wearing flip-flops without feeling guilty about it.

Now that we’re living in Florida, just a short flight from Miami, we’ve been on a mission to bring the essence of fall closer to home. So before I rush off without packing properly, I thought I’d share some of the small but meaningful ways we’ve tried to embrace the season.

1) The Neighborhood Boo Hunt

Yesterday, my daughter and I went door-to-door around the neighborhood for our annual "Boo" tradition. She was absolutely thrilled each time we rang the bell and then ducked out of sight, waiting behind a tree to hear the delighted squeals of the recipients. Her favorite part? Running back to me afterward, bubbling over with excitement, saying things like, "Did you hear that? They loved it!" or "There was a little boy inside! He’ll definitely enjoy it." It’s such a simple activity, but it brought so much joy to both of us.

2) Searching for Fall on Our Local Trail

We took a walk yesterday afternoon on the trail behind our house. The kids were determined to find signs of fall despite the lack of crisp air and changing leaves. They picked up acorns, twigs, and even a few stray pinecones that seemed to remind them of autumn. It was a delightful reminder that even in Florida, you can still connect with the spirit of the season.

3) Crafting with Found Treasures

We’ve been collecting leaves and pinecones on our walks to create seasonal crafts. My daughter is particularly proud of her leaf collage, which she insists smells like fall. Even though the leaves here aren’t quite as colorful as those in Michigan, it’s been a fun way to channel creativity and keep the spirit of the season alive.

4) Attending Local Fall Festivals

Speaking of staying connected to fall, we recently visited a local festival where we enjoyed pony rides and pumpkin patches. There’s something magical about watching my kids’ faces light up at the sight of ponies and hay bales. I’ll write more about it soon—I just need to find time between packing and trying to remember what day it is!

What are you all doing to celebrate fall? I’d love to hear your stories and ideas!
