How to store potato seeds in winter

Potato tubers are cold-resistant vegetables, and the ideal storage temperature ranges from 0 to 4°C. However, traditional methods such as deep-well kiln storage often lead to problems. The fluctuating temperature and humidity inside these structures can cause the seed potatoes to sprout prematurely, leading to nutrient loss and weak germination. On the other hand, using the trench method is also problematic because the ambient temperature can be unstable. If the storage ditch is too deep, it may suffer from heat damage, causing sprouting or rotting of the potatoes. Additionally, in colder conditions, the tubers may freeze and lose their viability. Therefore, using an empty house for winter storage is a more effective and practical approach. The process begins by sorting the potato seeds, removing any diseased or damaged pieces, and placing the healthy ones into nylon bags—each bag containing 20 to 30 pounds. These bags are then stacked in the empty house, with a height of 1.5 to 2.0 meters. It's important to keep the stacks away from the walls, maintaining at least 30 cm of space to avoid exposure to low temperatures. To maintain a stable environment, small pots or bowls filled with water are placed in the center of the room. As winter progresses and temperatures drop, when frost appears on the surface of the water, it’s time to cover the stacks with blankets. A thermometer should be hung inside the room to monitor the temperature, and the thickness of the blankets can be adjusted accordingly. During the coldest periods, hanging curtains on the doors and windows helps prevent cold air from entering. This method requires minimal investment, is easy to manage, and significantly reduces seed loss. It is especially suitable for small-scale farmers who need a simple yet effective way to store their potato seeds during the winter months.
