Chronic cough in children is a common and often challenging symptom that can last for more than four weeks. Despite normal chest X-rays, diagnosing the underlying cause can be complex. A recent study published in the first issue of the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics highlights the importance of using a structured diagnostic approach to identify the causes of chronic cough in children. Researchers from the Children's Hospital of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics, led by Ling Lingyun, applied the Morice diagnostic method to evaluate 81 children with prolonged coughing. The results showed that 65 cases (80.3%) were definitively diagnosed, 15 (18.5%) were suspected, and only one case remained undiagnosed. The most common causes included foreign bodies in the airway (16.9%), cough variant asthma or asthma (15.7%), post-infectious pulmonary conditions (14.5%), postnasal drip syndrome (8.4%), and other respiratory abnormalities such as bronchial dysplasia or narrowing (7.2%). The distribution of these causes varied depending on the child's age, highlighting the need for age-specific approaches in diagnosis. In addition to medical history and physical examination, imaging and lung function tests play a critical role in identifying the root cause. It’s also essential to monitor patients over time and adjust the diagnostic strategy as needed. This comprehensive approach helps ensure accurate diagnosis and better treatment outcomes. —— Information from: Meditech Medical Network
