Diagnosing chronic cough in children involves identifying the underlying causes, which can be complex and vary with age. A comprehensive approach that includes medical history, physical examination, imaging, and lung function tests plays a crucial role in determining the cause. The diagnostic process should be dynamic, with regular follow-ups to ensure accurate results. In addition, the Morice diagnostic method is often used as a supplementary tool to enhance diagnostic accuracy.
Chronic cough in children is a common yet challenging symptom, often lasting more than three to four weeks. Despite normal chest X-rays, treatment can be difficult and not always effective. A study published in the first issue of the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics in January explored the use of the Morice diagnostic procedure in 81 children with chronic cough. This method helped classify cases into definitive diagnoses, suspected cases, or unknown causes.
The study, conducted by researchers at the Children's Hospital of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics, found that 65 out of 81 cases (80.3%) were definitively diagnosed, while 15 (18.5%) were suspected, and one case remained unexplained. The most common causes included tracheal or bronchial foreign bodies (16.9%), cough variant asthma or asthma (15.7%), post-infectious pulmonary conditions (14.5%), and postnasal drip syndrome (8.4%). Other causes such as airway abnormalities or bronchoconstriction accounted for 7.2% of cases.
The distribution of these causes varied depending on the child’s age, highlighting the complexity of diagnosing chronic cough in this population. By using a structured and thorough diagnostic approach, healthcare providers can better identify and manage the root causes of chronic cough in children. Regular follow-up and updated evaluations are essential to improve outcomes and provide targeted treatments. This research underscores the importance of combining clinical judgment with standardized diagnostic methods like the Morice procedure to achieve better results.
