“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.†~Jawaharlal Nehru
This morning, we woke to autumn arriving on the wings of a brisk breeze. The air felt fresher, the temperatures delightfully dropped to a crisp 70 degrees, and the palm trees in our backyard? They swayed in unison, celebrating the arrival of fall like cheerleaders in victory.
I decided that watching cupcakes and intricately carved pumpkins on Food Network's Halloween Wars wasn’t enough, even though indulging in the art of nothingness was entirely satisfying. We spent time catching up with friends, sharing meals in our new kitchen, and listening to their stories of moving while the kids played hide-and-seek in the background. We embraced the mundane moments, letting the kids skip naps so they could engage in tickle fights on the couch instead. A decision that, depending on the day, either paid off or didn’t quite live up to expectations.
Still, I wanted my children to remember the crisp autumn mornings leading to wagons filled with vibrant orange pumpkins, the thrill of searching for the perfect size and shape, and the joy of carving them into smiling faces. I imagined them sipping mulled cider, their fingers sticky from freshly fried cinnamon sugar doughnuts.
So, we set out on a mission to find a makeshift pumpkin patch. We drove around, searching online, and followed the GPS on our phones. I almost pulled into a grocery store to buy one, but something held me back.
Did we find a pumpkin today? Not quite. Although there were a couple of pumpkin patches on church lawns—empty fields with tents, wagons, and rows of colorful gourds waiting patiently—they were closed. We briefly considered browsing anyway and slipping some cash and a note through the door, but we figured that wouldn’t foster the wholesome traditions we hoped to instill. So, we moved on. But we stumbled upon a Fall Festival featuring shaved ice cones. Toto, we’re definitely not in Michigan anymore.
We skipped the shaved ice and headed straight for the inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and games that handed out “suckers†as prizes. We also enjoyed some delicious little cupcakes with pumpkin-colored frosting.
It was a great day, but seriously, there will be pumpkins, cider, and cinnamon sugar doughnuts soon.
