The hacker said the stolen databases were from Farmington, Missouri, Central and Midwestern states, and Georgia, which contained medical records of 48,000, 210,000, and 397,000 patients. . The data was stolen and subsequent online information peddling was first reported by the news site Deep Dot Web, and the patient medical records involved included information from the US federal health care provider Blue Cross Blue Shield (hereinafter referred to as "BCBS"). According to the online publication Motherboard, the hacker claimed that he had sold $100,000 worth of medical records from a Georgia medical facility.
Motherboard said it had a conversation with the hacker, who provided a sample of 30 patient medical records and said they confirmed their identity by dialing the patient phone number provided in the log file.
The hacker said to Motherboard: "Someone specifically wants to buy all the insurance records of BCBS." The hacker continued, "I will compare the losses that the medical information will bring to the medical institutions once I decide to publicly disclose the victim information." The ransom required for these institutions is very small.
