Nano robots that accurately lock and kill cancer cells

Release date: 2016-08-22

Recently, researchers from the prestigious Canadian universities, McGill University, the University of Montreal and the Montreal Institute of Technology, have collaborated to make a major breakthrough in the field of cancer treatment. They developed a nano-robot that can run inside human blood vessels, precisely lock cancer cells and deliver drugs. This is the most advanced drug delivery system in the world, because it does not damage normal human tissues and organs at all; in addition, this means that patients can greatly reduce the dose of drugs to be taken, thereby reducing the side effects caused by these drugs.

According to Professor Sylvain Martel, head of the Nano Robotics Research Center at the Montreal Institute of Technology, each nano-robot carries no less than 100 million bacteria, each of which has flagella and self-propelled, carrying enough medicine. After entering the human body, it begins to look for areas that require medical treatment. Moreover, the driving force of drugs can make them penetrate into the tumor and effectively disintegrate the tumor.

The process, in particular, is that once the nanobots enter the tumor, they begin to search for places where oxygen is depleted, the “anoxic zone” and then deliver the drug there. Rapid proliferation of tumor cells requires the consumption of large amounts of oxygen, creating an "anoxic zone", which is the active and aggregating site of tumor cells. Until now, these “anoxic zones” have resisted major treatments, including radiation therapy. So Professor Martel will consider trying to use nanotechnology.

So why are the bacteria on the nano-robot self-motivated and able to enter the interior of the tumor? First, their motion is generated by the magnetic field created by nanoparticles, which moves rapidly due to magnetic attraction. Second, they use an "oxygen concentration measurement sensor" to find active areas inside the tumor (ie, cancer cell proliferation areas). And stay there. Once we can control the generation of magnetic fields through the computer, we can control the whereabouts of these bacteria and let them work.

The nano-robot's research and development team believes that as nano-robots are put into use, more advanced interventions will be discovered. Everyone knows that chemotherapy, like surgery and radiotherapy, is one of the three major means of treating cancer. However, because the selectivity of chemotherapy drugs is not strong, it will inevitably damage the normal cells of the human body while killing cancer cells. Produces serious side effects. The generation of nano-robots can help chemical drugs to be accurately placed on the cells that need to be killed, thereby reducing or even eliminating the side effects of chemotherapy, and improving the efficiency of this treatment!

At present, the research results of this project have been published in the professional journal "Nature Nanotechnology", entitled "Magneto-aerotactic bacteria deliver drug-containing nanoliposomes to tumour hypoxic regions." Bacteria put nanoliposomes containing therapeutic drugs into the hypoxic zone of the tumor, detailing the research results and the success of nanotechnology in the treatment of tumors.
