Metabolic syndrome is one of the risks of uric acid stones

Release date: 2007-11-26

Metabolic syndrome has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of uric acid kidney stones. Recent research published in the *Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology* highlights that individuals with metabolic syndrome often have acidic urine, which can worsen kidney health and increase the likelihood of stone formation. Dr. Naim Maalouf from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center conducted a study involving 148 patients, assessing factors such as height, weight, blood pressure, and history of kidney stones. None of the participants had previously experienced kidney stones. The study revealed that patients with metabolic syndrome exhibited high urinary acidity, which was found to be an independent risk factor, separate from age, gender, and body weight. Unlike other types of kidney stones, uric acid stones are more challenging to detect using standard abdominal X-rays, leading to delayed diagnosis and potential complications. This research marks the first time that urine acidity has been recognized as a key feature of metabolic syndrome, offering valuable insights for early detection and management of uric acid stones. ——Midi Medical Network
