Fenbutatin, also known as Tolke, Krypton-Tin, Nguyen-Chenxi, and Fenbuxi, is a widely used acaricide with multiple formulations available on the market. Commonly, it is found in 50% wettable powder (WP), 20%, 10%, and 25% formulations, among others. Over 30 companies are registered under the Ministry of Agriculture's Institute of Drug Control, including well-known firms such as Zhejiang Pharmaceutical Chemicals Co., Ltd., Shanghai Sakamoto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Wuxi Jiabao Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Foshan Daxing Biological Chemical Co., Ltd. (Guangdong), and Zhejiang Huaxing Chemical Pesticide Co., Ltd.
Fenbutatin is a long-acting and selective acaricide that exhibits strong contact activity against mites, particularly Pteris species. It has a slow initial effect after application, but its efficacy increases over time, reaching peak performance around day 14 and maintaining effectiveness for up to 30 days or more. It is considered safe for crops and does not harm natural enemies or beneficial insects. It is suitable for controlling various pests in fruit trees, vegetables, tea plants, cotton, and ornamental flowers. However, it is ineffective against quail eggs. The product performs poorly at temperatures below 22°C and should not be applied in cold conditions.
**Application Targets and Usage:**
1. **Fruit Tree Pests:**
- Controls citrus spider mites from April to May.
- Prevents citrus rust and manages pests on fruit surfaces.
- Controls red spider mites on apples and hawthorns.
- Apply at a concentration of 10% EC diluted 500–800 times, 25% wettable powder at 1000–1500 times, or 50% wettable powder at 2000–3000 times.
- The treatment remains effective for 1–2 months.
2. **Tea Plant Pests:**
- Controls tea orange wolfberry and short-mesh mites during non-picking periods.
- Apply 50% wettable powder diluted 1500 times evenly.
- Focus on the back of leaves and lower parts of the plant, ensuring thorough coverage.
3. **Flower and Ornamental Plants:**
- Controls chrysanthemum and rose leafhoppers during infestation periods.
- Use 50% wettable powder diluted 1000 times and spray thoroughly on foliage and leaves.
**Precautions and Safety Information:**
1. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) for fenbutatin is 0.03 mg/kg.
2. Maximum residue limits (MRLs) are set internationally: 5 mg/kg in citrus, 1 mg/kg in tomatoes, with a maximum of 6 applications allowed, and a maximum drug concentration of 1000 mg/l.
3. For citrus, the last application should be at least 14 days before harvest. For tomatoes, it should be stopped 10 days prior to harvesting.
Fenbutatin is an essential tool in integrated pest management due to its low toxicity to non-target organisms and long residual effect. Always follow label instructions carefully and ensure proper storage and disposal to minimize environmental impact.
