Metabolic syndrome is one of the risks of uric acid stones

Release date: 2007-11-26

Metabolic syndrome has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of uric acid kidney stones. Recent research published in the *Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology* highlights that individuals with metabolic syndrome often have acidic urine, which increases their susceptibility to kidney disease and stone formation. Associate Professor Naim Maalouf from the UT Southwestern Medical Center conducted a study involving 148 patients, examining factors such as height, weight, blood pressure, and the presence of kidney stones. None of the participants had a prior history of kidney stones. The study revealed that patients with metabolic syndrome exhibited high levels of urinary acidity, which was found to be an independent risk factor, separate from age, gender, and body weight. Uric acid stones are particularly challenging to diagnose because they are not always visible on standard abdominal X-rays, leading to delayed detection and potentially larger stone growth. This research marks the first time that urinary acidity has been recognized as a key characteristic of metabolic syndrome, offering clinicians new insights for early identification of uric acid stones. These findings may help improve diagnostic approaches and patient outcomes in the future. ——Midi Medical Network
