Lantern flowers, also known as arching flower baskets or hibiscus-like blossoms, are part of the Malvaceae family, closely related to hibiscus. Native to tropical Africa, these plants have traditionally been sensitive to cold, making them less common in northern China. However, after several years of domestication and cultivation, their cold tolerance has improved significantly. They can now survive winter temperatures around 10°C, making them more suitable for broader cultivation.
These evergreen shrubs can grow up to 2 meters tall when planted outdoors, while potted varieties typically reach 1 to 1.5 meters. Their branches are lush and droop gracefully, creating an elegant appearance. The slender flower stems hang down, with blooms that appear to be suspended like lanterns, adding a unique ornamental appeal. Due to limited past cultivation, there is growing interest in the market, offering promising sales potential.
Lantern flowers are easy to grow and maintain. They thrive in well-draining sandy soil, and propagation through cuttings is straightforward. Cuttings can be taken from one- to two-year-old shoots between April and June. The ideal temperature for rooting is between 20°C and 25°C. Compared to hibiscus, lantern flowers have longer internodes, so cuttings should be about 12 cm long. The lower part of the cutting should be shaped into a horseshoe to increase root surface area. After planting, it takes about a month for roots to develop, and after 45 days, they can be transplanted into pots. For the first few weeks, keep them in shaded conditions before gradually introducing them to full sunlight.
These fast-growing plants require nutrient-rich soil. A mix of humus-rich sandy loam combined with 20% to 30% fully decomposed animal manure is ideal. During the growing season, liquid fertilizer should be applied regularly. In the first three years, the soil should be replaced annually in spring to replenish nutrients. With proper care, the plants will bloom well the following year. To maintain a compact shape, pruning should be done regularly, especially to control height and encourage dense branching. Since the branches tend to droop, careful shaping helps maintain a neat and attractive form.
