Students at Binghamton University in the United States have tried 3D bioprinting to create artificial pancreas and hope to use this artificial pancreas to treat type 1 diabetes.
Diabetes is associated with insulin secretion. It has two types: 1 and 2. Type 1 diabetes means that the pancreas does not secrete insulin, and type 2 means that the body does not use insulin in the right way. Therefore, pancreas transplantation, although rare, usually occurs in patients with type 1 diabetes.
Pancreas transplantation
In general, patients with type 1 diabetes do not need to transplant the pancreas, but when the patient has severe kidney disease at the same time, pancreas transplantation occurs because both organs can be transplanted at the same time. Another reason for transplanting the pancreas is that the patient also has hypoglycemia. Interestingly, the transplanted pancreas does not replace existing organs.
Current routine pancreas transplants involve the use of donated organs, but Binghampton students hope their bioprinting work may change this in the future. Maybe in the future, if you have type 1 diabetes, they can print a pancreas for you with your own cells and then transplant them into your body.
