Peking University researchers prepare vaccines by replacing viral amino acids, or apply to any virus

Release date: 2016-12-07

A team of researchers at Peking University has developed a new vaccine. They claim that this new vaccine may make new ways to generate live virus vaccines possible, and that these vaccines may be suitable for any type of virus. Their paper was published in the journal Science, and the team outlined the general approach to modifying an influenza virus to trigger an immune response, but without the risk of infection.

Currently, most vaccines contain inactivated or deactivated viruses. Injecting it into a healthy person is often difficult to cause infection. The principle of this type of vaccine works is to lock the immune system to these similar viruses before the similar viruses in the body multiply and cause infection. Unfortunately, in some cases, people with weakened immune systems find themselves infected after vaccination. In this new study, researchers use a new approach to construct a modified influenza virus that does not cause any patient infection.

The team's starting point is that they use certain amino acids to cause infection during viral infection. Therefore, they said that one of the amino acids was replaced with another amino acid created in the laboratory to achieve the effect of modifying the virus. Such amino acids usually do not appear in viruses or humans. Without the correct amino acids, the virus still works, but it does not cause infection. And, because it is still an flu virus, its presence can lead to attacks by the body's immune system, and any other type of flu virus can be attacked by the immune system to prevent infection.

The team reported that testing the vaccines they created found that the immune response was comparable to traditional vaccines. When the test mice were vaccinated a second time, the researchers found that their antibodies increased six to eight times. In addition, they found that the virus can effectively prevent influenza virus infection in mice, ferrets and Guinea pigs.

The team plans to continue their research. They will undergo more rigorous testing before conducting clinical trials.
