Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used diagnostic technique that uses magnetic fields and sound waves to perform work. The inspection process is harmless to the human body and is safe and convenient. However, this technology has its limitations. One of them is that the imaging time is long. To get a clear image for diagnosis, "you must stay still."
Moreover, for the heart and joints, because of the rapid displacement in a short period of time, which exceeds the time required for MRI imaging, clear and reliable images cannot be obtained by this technique alone. Even if MRI is combined with an electrocardiogram for detection, data from different heart beats is combined for diagnosis.
In a recent study by scientists at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, they succeeded in shortening the MRI imaging time to one-fiftieth of a second, thus achieving MRI real-time dynamic imaging of the heart and joint for the first time. It enables people to directly observe the myocardial rhythm and blood flow caused by a heartbeat, and provide more accurate data for the diagnosis of heart disease, and "the patient does not need to hold his breath" during the examination.
For fast imaging purposes, they used radial encoding to reduce the sensitivity of the image to displacement. At the same time, new mathematical calculation methods have been established, enabling them to reconstruct reliable medical images with much less data than in the past, even with a data volume of 5%. Since the amount of data used is small, the time for collecting data is greatly reduced, so the imaging time is 10,000 times faster than in the mid-1980s.
This technique can be easily applied to current MRI equipment, but the new image reconstruction method also requires high computer performance. They are currently working with Siemens to study this result as soon as possible.
