As a result, it was found that the presence of radiation could be detected with a small amount of mineral water bottles. If the polyethylene terephthalate, the main component of the water bottle, is made into a 5 mm thick plate, it can achieve extremely high sensitivity.

Researcher Nakamura said that although plastic materials are currently used to make scintillators, special substances need to be added, and it is considered unsuitable for manufacturing medical high-precision measuring equipment. At present, the scintillator of medical positron emission tomography (PET) equipment is made of metal material, and although it is only the size of a thumb, its cost is as high as 1 million yen (about 10,900 US dollars), thereby improving the whole The cost of the equipment. The plastics for making mineral water bottles are inexpensive, so it is expected to reduce the cost of various medical radiation detecting equipment such as PET.
