AQSIQ launches emergency response mechanism to properly dispose of US oysters

On September 26, the FDA issued an announcement stating that oysters suspected to have been produced from August 30 to September 19 in the aquaculture area of the Hood Straits in Washington State were contaminated with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, causing five people to become ill due to eating oysters. There is a small amount of exports to China, Thailand, and Indonesia. The Washington State Department of Health has informed distributors, exporters, and importers to recall related raw oysters.

Upon hearing of the news, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine immediately confirmed with the US and launched an emergency response mechanism and adopted corresponding measures. First, to ensure safety, the import of oysters from Washington State in the United States was immediately suspended, and the second was the import of Chinese importers involved. The oysters implemented the recall processing. The third was the immediate detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus for oysters from other states in the United States, and the detection and monitoring of seafood products such as oysters and oysters imported from other countries and regions. At present, the relevant goods involved have passed the inspection and quarantine and have entered the domestic consumer market. No reports of illnesses caused by the consumption of imported oysters from Washington State are found.

It is understood that the domestic seafood consumption market is mainly dominated by domestic oysters. Due to factors such as freshness and price, imported oysters account for a very small proportion.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is also called halophilic bacteria. Most seafoods naturally carry the bacteria. The bacteria can be inactivated at 56°C for 5 minutes and can die in vinegar for 1-3 minutes. However, in the case of rising temperatures, the rapid bacterial growth, coupled with the main raw food is raw, easily lead to the incidence of frail consumer groups, so the risk of health and safety is relatively high. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has reminded consumers that good eating habits should be developed. For seafood such as oysters, oysters and shellfish, it is recommended that they be eaten under cooked conditions.

In addition, according to a recent network report that the contamination of Listeria monocytogenes caused by multiple infections in the United States, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) pointed out that currently the United States has not yet obtained the market access qualification for exporting to China, and China has no melon from the United States. Airlines that are required to operate with the United States have stopped supplying melons and other cold foods to American flights to China. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has requested inspection and quarantine agencies throughout the country to intensify the inspection, quarantine and monitoring of similar and related products imported from other countries or regions in order to prevent unqualified products from entering China.
