Drying before the seeds are stored

Before seeds are put into storage, drying in the sun for 3 to 5 days has many advantages.

First, reduce the water content. The freshly harvested seeds have higher water content and are air-dried, which can reduce the moisture content, promote seed dormancy, weaken the respiration of the seeds, and prolong the life of the seeds.

Second, increase the germination rate. Drying seeds can increase the vitality of embryos and maintain the normal germination ability of seeds. According to experiments, the germination rate of the seeds of less sun-dried seeds of the same species of maize after the autumn sun is 10% to 20% higher.

Third, kill the bacteria. When drying in the sun, ultraviolet rays can kill certain pathogens that adhere to the surface of seeds, and prevent the occurrence of insect gall, mildew, and deterioration.

Fourth, promote after-ripening. Seed maturity is divided into two stages. The first is the maturation of the seed morphology, which is called species maturation, and then the physiological maturity. When the seeds are harvested, they generally only mature in form. Such seeds have weak vitality, and the seedlings are not neat after planting. The physiologically mature seeds have strong vitality and high emergence rate.
