Pigeon breeding behavior

In the practice of meat pigeon breeding, mastering the reproductive characteristics of meat pigeons can provide a basis for its breeding techniques; the following describes its main reproductive behavior: pairing, nesting, egg production, and hatching.

1, pairing

Pairing is one of the characteristics of pigeon breeding. After the male cocks matured, they showed various courtship behaviors. The male and female pigeons are close to each other, and the common pigeons are very interested in the hens. They turn around the hens and nod their heads frequently. They constantly make buzzing sounds. The hens also became fond of the cock Close to the cocks, the male and female pigeons are often inseparable. The two often kiss each other. The hens always stick the cockroaches into the mouth of the cocks, and the cocks sometimes spit some food for the cocks to eat. The cocks are also used to gently comb the feathers of the hen's head, neck and back. At this time, the number of matings between male and female hens has also increased significantly, indicating that the hens will soon lay eggs.

Pairing methods are natural pairing (free pairing) and forced pairing (artificial pairing). Natural pairing can be further divided into large groups of natural and small group matches. Pairing naturally means that the pigeons freely select objects in the group. In general, the time for group matching is longer than that for small groups. Small groups can be paired because the space is small and there are many opportunities for contact. The time for pairing can be greatly shortened. Natural pairing is suitable for commodity pigeon production fields; forced pairing, that is, artificial selection of a pair of pigeons, placed in the same breeding cage, separated by barbed wire in the middle of the cage, through the opposite, establishing feelings, and not creating a truss phenomenon When you can, you will be able to extract the screen and the match will be successful.

When pairing, the population must reach sexual maturity, and the age and weight difference cannot be too large. The breeding period and weight requirements for different breeder breeders are shown below.

Shi Wei pigeons: fit 26 to 30 weeks old, the weight of the common pigeon 680 to 800 grams, the weight of the hen pigeon 650 to 770 grams.

Wang Ge: Fits 26 to 30 weeks old, weighs 730 to 850 grams, and weighs 680 to 800 grams.

Mondane pigeon: fits 26 to 30 weeks old, cocks weight 800 to 900 grams, hen weight 740 to 850 grams.

Helm pigeons: fit 22 to 26 weeks old, pigeons weighing 380 to 770 grams, hen weights 620 to 700 grams.

Pigeons: adapted 35 weeks old, cock weight 1190 ~ 1250 grams, weigh 960 ~ 1030 grams of hens.

2. Nesting

It is the nature of the pigeons to build nests. After matching the male and female pigeons, they will look for nesting materials. Generally, 3 to 4 days before the egg is laid, the male and female pigeons are inseparable. The hens are walking in front and the cocks are chasing after them. This is a sign that the hen is about to lay eggs. The common name is “chasing eggs”. Before the laying of the eggs, the cocks first buzzed at the nest and at the nest, and they uttered a buzzing sound, which induced the hens to lay eggs. After the hens have nested in their nests, the cocks are out looking for twigs, grass, etc., and put them into the nest for the hens to weave their nests. After the laying of the eggs, when the cocks are hatched on duty, the hens are also required to egress the grass and reinforce the nests. If artificially prepared nests, suitable hay beforehand, can remove the burden of nesting.

3, egg production

Pairing pigeons for 7-10 days begins to lay eggs. Under normal circumstances, two eggs are produced per litter. The first egg is usually laid in the afternoon or the evening of the first day. The first day of production is discontinued the next day and the second egg is produced after the noon of the third day. About 48 hours apart. If one egg is taken away, the hen will produce another one. However, to ensure the health of the breeding pigeons, this is not advocated.

4, hatching

Incubation is also a pigeon's instinct. The hatching time is mostly after the two eggs are laid, and the pigeons are hatched by the hens, while the cocks crows work as guards for the hens at the nests. Of course, this division of time is not static. When one side leaves the nest occasionally, the other will take the initiative. Occasionally, the cocks will be lazy to leave the nest and the hens will chase them back into their nests to continue hatching. The pigeon's incubation period is 18 days.

In the main producing area of Lycium barbarum in Ningxia, in Zhongning County of Ningxia Province, farmers are used to call Lycium barbarum as "tz", which is terrestrial Tribulus terrestris. This is because the wild wolfberry is similar to the Tribulus terrestris, often mixed for firewood, in the folk "Ci" as the common name of wolfberry.
