Israel uses genetically modified technology to produce high-protein milk

Israeli scientists recently discovered a gene that determines the concentration of protein in milk produced by dairy cows. Scientists plan to use this discovery to promote the production of high-protein milk in dairy farms around the world. A group of researchers, led by Dr. Mikalen, of the Agricultural Research Institute, discovered a gene called ABCG2 in the body of a cow. This gene can not only increase the protein content of milk, but one of the new genes can even increase the protein concentration by 10%. This is the first gene in the world that has been found to control the protein content of milk – the second known gene associated with milk production in dairy cows. Using traditional feeding methods, the best growth rate of protein content (or other substances) in milk is 1% per year—this means that it takes 10 years to increase the milk concentration by 10%. Now, dairy farmers can use a simple blood test to identify which burdock contains this high protein gene.
