Chicken manure is a byproduct of poultry farming that contains a mix of undigested feed, feathers, shavings, and small amounts of broken egg yolk. It also includes non-digestible components like crude fiber and unabsorbed nutrients. The dry matter of chicken manure typically contains 31% to 33% crude protein, but more than half of this protein is in the form of non-protein nitrogen, such as uric acid, urea, creatine, and ammonia. In addition, it naturally contains some crude fiber, which makes it a viable resource for animal feed.
Because of its high nutritional value, chicken manure can be used as an effective feed ingredient for fish farming. It serves as an ideal raw material for producing fish pellet feed, especially when properly processed. Using chicken manure in fish feed not only reduces costs but also promotes a sustainable ecological cycle between poultry and aquaculture.
However, raw chicken manure should not be directly fed to fish because it may contain parasite eggs, harmful bacteria, and other pathogens. To make it safe and nutritious, it needs to be treated with a professional fermentation starter, such as Kinpo 2-type starter. The process involves mixing chicken manure (around 50%) with corn flour, soybean meal, rapeseed cake, and bran. A certain amount of the starter is added, and water is adjusted to about 60%. After 3 to 4 days of fermentation, the mixture becomes a safe and nutrient-rich feed.
This fermented feed can then be processed into pellets and used to feed various aquatic species, including grass carp, loaches, and squid. Compared to traditional fish pellet feeds, which cost around 0.30 to 0.40 yuan per kilogram of fish, using chicken manure-based feed can reduce feed costs by over 50%, bringing the cost down to just 0.15 to 0.20 yuan per kilogram. This makes it a highly cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for fish farmers looking to improve their profitability while maintaining sustainability.
