Can certain microbial species really prevent asthma? A recent study published online by the journal Nature Medicine found that exposure to dust microbes in farm-like homes is associated with a lower incidence of asthma in urban children.
The occurrence of asthma has been confirmed to be related to urbanization. The incidence of this disease is higher in developing countries than in developing countries, and cities are higher than rural areas. Scientists believe that this may be due to the loss of key house dust microbes during urbanization, which are still present on farms. However, scientists have not known whether the presence of farm bacteria in urban environments is also associated with a decline in the prevalence of asthma.
In view of this, the Finnish National Institute of Health and Welfare, Pierre Gil Gavigne and colleagues, studied the house dust microbiota in 395 Finnish rural and suburban children’s homes, and found a farm-related A unique microbial abundance model. The team then repeated the results in a study of 1,031 German children who found that if the indoor microbiota of a non-farm residence is similar to that of a Finnish farm, the children living there are at lower risk of asthma.
Whether the individual microbial species can directly prevent asthma, this observational study did not give a conclusion, but further affirmed the role of environmentally-sourced bacteria in the development of asthma. Researchers believe that determining the microbiota composition of residential areas will help assess and monitor the risks associated with asthma in suburban and urban children.
Asthma is a public health problem that is of global concern. The cause of the disease is complex and it is currently difficult to cure and will recur. The data shows that about 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, and children are a frequent group of people with asthma.
