Who will become the hegemon in the surgical robot market?

Release date: 2016-03-15

The medical circle has received attention, and the surgical robots that have quickly entered the field of vision in recent years are also optimistic. The "13th Five-Year Plan" (Draft) contains more than 160 major projects and projects proposed in 23 columns, which will become the focus of the national development in the next five years, and "surgical robots" are among them.

How the surgical robot works

In fact, the surgical robot is just a surgical platform. During the operation, the doctor can sit in the operation console away from the operating table, hold the handle with both hands, and simultaneously control the mechanical arm surgical instruments in the patient to perform the operation. The surgical procedure under this system operation is more controllable than traditional surgery, and it brings room for development of “remote surgery”: in the future, doctors in Beijing and Shanghai can remotely control robots in Xinjiang and Tibet to become a reality. .

In China, robotic surgery is currently used in general surgery (hepatobiliary, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, etc.), cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, gynecology, pediatric surgery, throat and neck surgery. One reality that has to be faced up is that almost all the robots used in public and private hospitals in China are imported, and the intuitive surgery company has become the biggest winner with the Da Vinci Robot.

According to the statistics of Chinese suppliers, since the first Da Vinci surgical robot was settled in China in 2006, as of December 2015, dozens of Da Vinci surgical robots distributed throughout the country completed surgery 11145 last year. For example, a total of 22,917 cases of surgery were completed over the years. According to the IFR (International Federation of Robotics), the global sales of medical robots will reach about 4,000 units in 2018. From 2014 onwards, the average annual compound annual growth rate will reach 34.45% in the next four years. It will look even better.

Policy support and huge market increments, for the domestic medical machinery enterprises, who can take the lead in the development of surgical robot equipment with independent intellectual property rights, who will take the market opportunity. For domestic patients, although surgical robots have many advantages: higher precision, effective avoidance of artificial hand tremor defects, less bleeding, affecting the system to effectively eliminate surgical blind spots ... but the patients who dare to try are still not many, except trust In addition to the high cost of surgery, another major factor.

This high cost mainly comes from two aspects: First, the robot itself is expensive to purchase, and a Da Vinci robot is sold at a price of about 20 million yuan in China. More important is the cost of consumables. From the beginning, this global robotics company with a market share of more than 50% took the business model of “equipment consumables”. The "mechanical arm" of each robot can only be used ten times, and each operation requires 3 to 4 robot arms. The replacement cost of each robot arm is close to 20,000 yuan. On average, after each system is sold. The annual service fee is close to 2 million yuan.

The emergence of domestic robots is expected to break this bottleneck

Wu Xinyu, a researcher at the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Robots, said in an interview that domestically produced surgical robots, regardless of production process or procurement of key components, will have lower thresholds and the price will be only one-third of imported robots. And is expected to land in the market after 3 to 5 years. In fact, the domestic surgical robot “Miao S S” jointly developed by Tianjin University and Central South University has been successfully tested in clinical trials.

In the eyes of the industry, in addition to the manufacturing innovation of robot manufacturers, the cultivation of users is another important factor in the development of the industry. "Robot surgery is like playing games. Whether the surgery is done well depends on the doctor's operation level." Hua Keqin, the chief physician of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital affiliated to Fudan University, told reporters that at present, more than 200 robotic gynecological operations have been performed in their hospitals. Due to the guarantee of medical safety, the current robotic surgery in China is usually performed by doctors above the director level to control the safety of the operation.
